What is a username generator?
A username generator is a tool that suggests names for your social media, gaming or work accounts. You add a few words and pick a platform and style, and it writes ten ideas that fit that platform's length and allowed characters. It can't see which names are taken, so check your pick on the platform.
How long can a username be on each platform?
Every platform sets its own length and character rules. X has the tightest limit at 15 characters, so a name that fits X fits almost everywhere. If you want one name across all your accounts, start with X's rules.
| Platform | Characters | Allowed |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) | Up to 15 | Letters, numbers, underscores |
| Up to 30 | Letters, numbers, periods, underscores | |
| Threads | Up to 30 | Uses your Instagram username |
| TikTok | Up to 24 | Letters, numbers, periods, underscores |
| Twitch | 4 to 25 | Letters, numbers, underscores |
| 3 to 20 | Letters, numbers, hyphens, underscores |
Should I use the same username everywhere?
Yes, if you're building a name for yourself or a business. One handle on LinkedIn, X and Instagram makes you easy to find and tag, and people trust that it's really you. If your first choice is taken somewhere, add a short word that fits all of them, like your field or "hq", rather than a random number.
Once the name is set, the free bio generator can write the line under it. Postel drafts posts for LinkedIn and X in your voice and schedules them.
