Postel runs a hosted MCP server for X (Twitter). Connect it to Claude, Cursor or another MCP client and your assistant can look up high-performing X posts, draft tweets and threads in your voice, save them to your content calendar, and schedule or publish them to your X account once you approve.

What This X MCP Server Does

  • Researches what works. search-viral-tweets searches Postel's library of high-performing X posts by topic, so the assistant can study real examples before it writes.
  • Drafts posts and threads in your voice. generate-post writes a single post or a full thread using your voice profile and knowledge base.
  • Saves your own text. create-post stores text you wrote in the conversation as a draft.
  • Refines drafts. refine-post suggests a rewrite from an instruction such as "tighter hook".
  • Schedules and publishes. schedule-post queues a draft for a date and time. publish-post posts it right away.
  • Knows your setup. get-x-profiles returns your voice profiles and get-schedule your weekly posting slots.

The same server also handles LinkedIn. See the LinkedIn MCP server page.

What It Does Not Do

This is a writing and publishing server, not a general X API wrapper. It does not:

  • read your timeline, mentions or DMs
  • like, reply, repost or follow on your behalf
  • run a live search of X (research comes from Postel's indexed library)

How to Set Up the X MCP Server

Step 1: Create a Postel account and connect X

Sign in to Postel with your X account. That connects the account your posts will publish to.

Step 2: Add the server to your MCP client

The server URL is https://www.postel.app/api/mcp. It uses Streamable HTTP and supports OAuth 2.1 or an API key. Client-specific instructions are below.

Step 3: Sign in

With OAuth, your client opens a browser window where you sign in to Postel and approve access. With an API key, create one under Settings > API Keys and pass it as a bearer token.

Step 4: Ask for a post

Ask your assistant to find examples on a topic and draft a post. Review it, ask for changes, then tell it when to schedule.

Client Setup

Claude (web and desktop)

  1. Open Customize > Connectors.
  2. Click +, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter https://www.postel.app/api/mcp and click Add.
  4. Sign in to Postel when Claude asks you to connect.

Custom connectors are available on every Claude plan. The free plan allows one.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http postel https://www.postel.app/api/mcp

Then run /mcp inside a Claude Code session and complete the sign-in in your browser.

Cursor and VS Code

Add this to your MCP configuration, with an API key from Settings > API Keys:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "postel": {
      "type": "url",
      "url": "https://www.postel.app/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer pstl_YOUR_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Example Prompts

  • "Find viral posts about bootstrapping a SaaS and tell me what the best hooks have in common."
  • "Draft a thread about what we learned from our last launch."
  • "Save this as a draft: [your text]."
  • "Show me what is scheduled for this week."
  • "Schedule the launch thread for Thursday at 3pm New York time."

Nothing is published until you say so: your MCP client asks for approval before it runs a tool that schedules or publishes, unless you have turned that off.

X's Own MCP Server vs Postel

X launched a hosted MCP server in June 2026. It does a different job from Postel's:

X's hosted MCPPostel's MCP server
Main useReading and searching XWriting and scheduling posts
SearchFull-archive post search, user search, trendsPostel's library of high-performing posts
Read timelines, mentions, bookmarksYesNo
Create a regular postNoYes

X's documentation lists no tool for creating regular posts; it covers posts, search, users, bookmarks, trends and Articles. Details are in the X MCP docs.

The two work well together: use X's server to research and read, and Postel's to write and schedule.

Plans and Limits

  • Research, drafting and reading posts work on any plan. Drafting counts against your monthly generation quota.
  • Scheduling and publishing need a paid plan or an active trial.
  • API keys are limited to 60 requests per minute.

Paid plans start at $19/month billed yearly, with a 7-day trial. See pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude post to X (Twitter)?

Yes, through an MCP server that has publishing access. With Postel connected, Claude drafts the post, you approve it, and Postel publishes or schedules it on your X account.

Can Claude schedule tweets?

Yes. Ask Claude to schedule a draft for a date and time. Postel's schedule-post tool queues it and the post goes out at that time.

Can it write threads?

Yes. generate-post writes a full thread when the assistant asks for one, and the thread is scheduled as a single unit.

Is the research a live search of X?

No. search-viral-tweets searches Postel's indexed library of high-performing posts, not the live X timeline.

Do I need an X API key?

No. You connect your X account to Postel once. The MCP server uses that connection.

Which MCP clients are supported?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth or a bearer token, including Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf.

Is this the official X MCP server?

No. X has its own hosted MCP server for reading and searching X, which needs an X developer app. Postel's server is a separate product for drafting, scheduling and publishing posts through your Postel account.
